Who Are We?

Cliff is comfortable in every forum, with an impressive track record of success. He has tried and won cases in every level of the state trial courts (district, probate, superior). He regularly appears in the federal court in Maine, where he began his career as a law clerk to its then-Chief Judge. He has successfully argued appeals in both the state and federal courts. He has written briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court. He has successfully arbitrated cases with claims at issue from five figures to eight. He has tried cases before state and federal regulators. He has negotiated successfully for dozens of clients in mediations, judicial settlement conferences and direct party-to-party negotiations in cases large and small within and outside Maine. And he advises corporate leadership to help them understand and approve legal strategy in cases of substantial import. For 2015, he was selected by Best Lawyers as "Lawyer of the Year" for Bet-the-Company Litigation in the Portland region.  Helping clients with difficult problems is what he does best, no matter where he has to go to do it.

Before he became a lawyer, Cliff earned a Ph.D. in Theology and taught religion at the college level. He has an impressive ability to communicate clearly with clients, lawyers, judges and jurors alike, even when dealing with difficult concepts. And he approaches his work with a deep humanity and integrity. For years, he chaired the ethics committee of a 100+ lawyer law firm. He regularly advises lawyers on issues of professional ethics and duties, sits on the Advisory Committee on the Rules of Professional Conduct and was a member of the Task Force that undertook the first wholesale revision of Maine’s attorney ethics rules in three decades.

Cliff’s skills and varied background are also well-suited to serving as a neutral, whether as arbitrator or mediator, to help resolve disputes involving legal, procedural or factual complexity.

A wide variety of clients trust Cliff’s sound judgment, value his impressive legal and financial acumen, and appreciate his warmth and humanity.  He is a tough, smart, warm and deeply trustworthy advocate you’ll be glad to have at your side, wherever your legal issues may take you.
